Following 2010’s debut mini-album The North Stands For Nothing, ‘This is the six’ tears the British Metalcore quintet’s expectations to pieces with their sick riffs and unfathomable rhythms. Consisting of the bonus song from The North Stands For Nothing: Be(lie)ve, and singles: Dead behind the eyes, Seven Hills and the title song, This is the six is one of the best metal records of twenty twelve and promises a strong future for While She Sleeps.
Where America’s Metalcore scene spawns artists like Killswitch Engage and As I Lay dying, While She Sleeps take the British Metalcore scene to storm alongside bands such as Bury Tomorrow, Sylosis and Architects, all of which have new studio albums out this year.
My favourite songs of This is the Six have to be Until The Death, Satisfied in Suffering and Our Courage, Our Cancer, not including the singles that I had already fallen in love with.
On first listening to This Is The Six, I found myself overwhelmed by the quality of the studio production. The album just feels so Metal, combining Adam Savage’s insane double pedal work, Sean and Mat’s heavy riff’s, and Loz’s haunting screams. With the sound of This is the six; this album puts you in a Metal trance in which you feel only the urge to scream from the bottom of your heart to the unforgettable lyrics.
Our Courage, Our Cancer grabbed me by the throat and held on until the song comes to a gut-wrenching end. It opens in Mono with a piano intro, followed by Loz’s breath-taking vocals, including lyrics from The North Stands For Nothing under the chilling clean guitar in the bridge, building up to an incredible ending to the song. ‘I will look up to the stars, so you will forever see, the best part of you still lives in me.’
Although at times feeling a little generic by the nature of the Metalcore genre, While She Sleeps have a unique sound that the metal community will continue to embrace. Although having less variation than perhaps other metal records, This is the six has some chilling acoustic parts, for instance the songs Reunite, the chapel and the intro to Love at war. Either coincidently or not, While She Sleeps recorded the album at Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire.
As if the album wasn’t perfect enough, This is the six comes to a beautiful, chilling end in Reunite, using ideas from the debut album; ‘The north still stands for nothing, but the streets don't feel the same’. It leaves every sleeps fan breathless and leaving the perfect set up for a next album.
This is the six was released on August 13th 2012 via Search and Destroy records. You can pick it up at amazon, itunes, in stores, or from their website.
